French, German, Italian, and Spanish tests are available online. Chinese and Arabic placement tests need to be scheduled with Dr. Lev Weitz (Arabic, weitz@cua.edu) or Prof. Yung-Yung Chang (Chinese, 37chang@cua.edu).

Please make sure you need the placement test by reviewing our language placement guidelines.

Read through the following directions BEFORE beginning the test.

For proper placement, answer to the best of your ability without outside assistance (textbooks, dictionaries, online translators, friends, native speakers, etc.). Please remember that the purpose of this test is to help place you in the proper level, thus ensuring that you will be neither too challenged nor too frustrated. If you consult outside material, it would skew your results and place you at a class level that would make it difficult for you to succeed.

  • Please note the following important points:
  • Placement results expire one calendar year from the date of the test. If your test results are more than a year old, you will need to re-take the test. 
  • If you score above the intermediate level on the placement test, you must have an oral interview to confirm your results. The placement coordinator will be in touch with you to schedule the oral interview.

Italian Placement Test

Register for the Italian placement test by calling the office of the Modern Language Dept at 202-319-5240 or by emailing Flor Argueta (arguetaf@cua.edu).

French, German and Spanish Placement Tests

  1. Click on Modern Language Placement Test
  2. Select your language (French, German or Spanish) and click on "Begin"
  3. Enter your personal information as requested (Use your Student ID Number for your ID Number, CUA email is required.)
  4. Fill in the information requested and click on "Continue" at the bottom of the page or click on "Resume" if your previous exam was interrupted for some reason, and you wish to resume it.
  5. At the end of the test, you can see your score and suggested placement. The online test result is only preliminary. You must wait to register for a class until you get your final placement. Your final placement will be posted to the system within 5 working days during the semester (It may take longer in summer). If you haven’t received your placement by then, you may call 202-319-5240 Mon.-Friday, between 9 am-4 pm.
