Career development is a central focus of our programs in both Global Studies and Media Studies. We prepare students not only to understand the world, but to engage with it professionally—with the cultural fluency, analytical skills, and ethical grounding that today’s employers seek. Global Studies majors gain a strong foundation in international issues, regional expertise, foreign language proficiency, and cross-cultural communication, making them competitive candidates for careers in diplomacy, international development, education, policy, nonprofit work, journalism, and business. Many students also complement their studies with internships in Washington, D.C., study abroad, and second majors or minors tailored to their goals.
Media Studies majors benefit from a curriculum that blends theory and practice, giving them the tools to critically analyze media and to create compelling digital content. Our students develop strong writing, speaking, and visual storytelling skills, along with a keen understanding of the social and cultural forces that shape media. Graduates have gone on to careers in journalism, film, public relations, digital marketing, communications, and media production. The program’s location in the nation’s capital offers rich opportunities for internships and networking at media organizations, nonprofits, and cultural institutions.
Across both majors, we emphasize experiential learning and close faculty mentorship as key components of professional development. Students receive one-on-one guidance as they identify career interests, build their résumés, and pursue real-world opportunities. We also collaborate with the University’s Center for Academic and Career Success to help students explore job and graduate school options, practice interview skills, and connect with alumni networks. Our goal is to graduate students who are not only well-educated, but also well-prepared to make a difference in their chosen fields.
Our trained professional career counselors in the Center for Academic and Career Success are ready to help you get on track toward your career goals from the first day you set foot on campus.
