Welcome to the Department of Global Studies at The Catholic University of America. I’m Dr. Julia Young, historian of Mexico and Latin America, member of the Catholic University faculty, and proud graduate of CUA (B.A., Class of '01). As Chair of this newly established department, I’m honored to lead an exciting initiative that reimagines how we prepare students for life and work in a globally connected world. With a background in migration history and a deep commitment to interdisciplinary learning, I’m passionate about helping students develop the skills, knowledge, and curiosity they need to thrive across geographic, linguistic, and cultural borders.
The Department of Global Studies was created in 2024 through the merger of three dynamic programs: the Department of Modern Languages and Literatures, and the Department of Media and Communication Studies, and the Program in Africana Studies and Research. This transformation reflects a forward-looking vision of what global education can be. By bringing together faculty with expertise in language learning, media literacy, and cultural studies, we’ve created a space where students can explore the complexities of today’s world and chart their own path toward meaningful, internationally engaged careers.
To our current and prospective students, I want to extend a warm welcome. We’re proud to offer rigorous academics, close faculty mentorship, and abundant opportunities for real-world experience through internships, study abroad, and research. I invite you to explore our programs, meet our faculty, and discover how the Department of Global Studies can be a launchpad for your future.
